Food Insecurity is Associated with Lower HF Survival Amongst Patients with Heart Failure

Medicine resident Dr Keerthi Gondi and cardiologist Dr Scott Hummel at the University of Michigan presented an abstract at the Heart Failure Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting. The researchers used CDC WONDER and USDA Food Environment Atlas datasets, including the Food Environment Index (FEI) to obtain data about food insecurity oand HF mortality on a county level. Of the 859 counties in the United States included in the analysis and counties with had a lower FEI had higher rates of age-adjusted HF mortality. Higher HF mortality counties also had higher income inequity, a lower density of stores and food assistance programs, and more seniors with low access to food stores.
