Study published in JAMA demonstrates higher acceptability to fresh produce compared to medically prepared meals

Healthy eating is an important part of heart failure care. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) tested whether providing dietitian-led food for people who may struggle to afford nutritious food could help people stay healthier by reducing hospital visits. Some patients received weekly medically tailored meals, while others received fresh food boxes for cooking at home.

The study found high rates of successful food delivery, with over 90% of planned deliveries successfully received by participants. The healthy food programs did not clearly lower the number of hospital or emergency room visits during the 3-month follow-up period. However, patients that received the food did report feeling better and have a better quality of life. Patients especially preferred receiving fresh produce, likely due to flexibility and having the ability to choose what to cook.

Nutrition is only one factor in patient care. Combining healthy eating with exercise, optimal medical therapy, education, and social support continue to be keys. Our team is exploring this intersection in a new clinical trial to begin in Fall of 2026.
